Hello once again! I hope that everyone who watched the big game in the United States and in other places around the globe had an enjoyable Super Bowl Sunday. My favorite part was Paul McCartney's mini halftime concert...amazing sights and sounds!
In this edition, I offer a few inkjet/OSX tips, and share some other info that I believe will be of interest to many subscribers.
Inkjet Tip
This is a small but important little detail with regard to printing in OSX:
Finding & Using the Progress Dialog in OSX: For those of us old enough to remember the Mac OS9 driver, after clicking on the "Print" button in just about any application, a status monitor application would launch, and we could easily see our job's progress in the form of a progress bar. In OSX, that function is not as easy to find, but it is there if you look for it.
You might expect that if you have the Printer List open, you could just double click on your printer's name, but that doesn't usually work.
Instead, after sending a Print job to your printer, and after the document spools into memory, an icon of a printer should appear on the right side of your Dock(if your Dock is at the top or bottom of your screen). If you click on it, you'll see your progress bar. You can then easily stop printing, delete items in the queue and see multiple jobs lining up in the bottom of the box as you print multiple jobs.
There are other ways to get this progress bar to show up, and another way is to open the Printer Setup Utility (It is in the Utilities folder, which is in the OSX Applications Folder. I recommend putting an alias of it in your dock by dragging the icon into your Dock). After highlighting one of the printers, select "Create Desktop Printer". I usually save it to the Desktop and when double clicked, the status bar will appear. That desktop icon can even be dragged into the OSX sidebar area to the left of the main Finder window. It will then serve as an alias, though the original item will stay on the desktop. A screen shot is below:

Articles & More Articles
As many of you know, I am Editorial Director of Digital Imaging Techniques (formally called Digital Imaging). The magazine's web site has a lot of articles on topics from Inkjet Printing to Portfolios and Web Design Tips. Here is a direct link to many recent articles.
There is an option to request a free subscription via a link next to the cover art for Digital Imaging Techniques (some people won't qualify and I apologize if that happens; the primary audience is pro commercial photographers, so if you are a pro photographer your chances are a bit better to qualify). On the left of the screen, you can enter your e-mail address to receive a number of different e-newsletters and other info.
If you are primarily a wedding/portrait/senior photographer, I recommend requesting a sunscription to Studio Photography & Design (our sister publication). You can request a subscription here
PhotoImaging & Design Expo Coming this April!
As mentioned last month, the next PhotoImaging & Design Expo is scheduled for April 19-21, 2005 in San Diego, CA. I'll be doing a few inkjet-related workshops (dates and full descriptions are now up on the site) and the full roster of speakers is now available for review. If last year is any guide, the seminars and trade show will be excellent. A 3-day pass is less than $200 if reserved early (includes a welcome party and a choice of more than 60 seminars during 3 info-packed days). Parking for those coming by car is about $10 a day in the Convention Center's parking area, and for those flying in, hotels are very affordable. Check www.hotwire.com for some great options. There is also a very large Motel 6 not too far from the Convention Center. There is great dining and entertainment right across the street from the event in the historic Gaslamp district. If you like Mexican food, you will be in heaven!
It really is a unique opportunity in a beautiful city. For more info, visit the site here: (PIDE).
